Maria T. “Terri” Kuethe, of Sumner, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. Daniel Knipper officiating. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 22, and for one hour preceding services time at the church on Tuesday. A Rosary will be recited at 4:45 p.m. and a Scripture Service will be held at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated to a charity of their choice at a later date.
Maria “Terri” daughter of Faustino and Celia (Gonzalez) Miranda was born April 16, 1935, in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. She received her education in the local schools and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Puerto Rico. Terri attended the University of Iowa in 1959 and while doing so, met her future husband, Ron Kuethe. On December 30, 1960, she was united in marriage with Ron Kuethe at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sãbana Seca, Puerto Rico. To this union three children were born, Ronnie, Cindy, and Michelle. The couple lived in the Sumner area for many years. She received her Master’s Degree in Education in 1970 from the University of Northern Iowa. Terri’s teaching career began in Puerto Rico in 1955 and spanned forty-two years. Initially an English instructor, she went on to teach Spanish in Fayette, West Union, Tripoli, Sumner, and Upper Iowa University before retiring in 1997. She was a long time member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner, a sister with the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Latin-American Club in Waterloo. Terri enjoyed macramé, crocheting, painting, flower arranging, traveling, cooking, entertaining friends, shopping, and loved to dance. She was an exceptional seamstress, most notably designing and creating couture bridal gowns.
In addition to her husband, Ron of Sumner, Terri is survived by her three children, Ronnie (Colleen) Kuethe of Urbandale, Cindy Kuethe-Bradley of Phoenix, Arizona, and Michelle Carter of St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Aaron and Kayla Kuethe, and Yesenia and Dominique Bradley; two sisters, Antonia Patiño of Orlando, Florida, and Carmelina Miranda of New York City, New York; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Faustino Miranda; and three sisters, Edith Ortíz, Faustina Rivera, and Alicia Miranda.
